CAL FIRE hazard zones and your insurer’s wildfire assessment
Prepared by CertiDwell · Updated September 5, 2026. General preparation guidance; individual evidence requirements should be confirmed with your agent or insurer.
A CAL FIRE Fire Hazard Severity Zone is official hazard context. It is not your insurer’s wildfire risk score, quote or eligibility decision.
Two different questions
| Information | What it tells you | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| CAL FIRE hazard zone | The mapped hazard classification at a location | An insurer’s price or willingness to write a policy |
| Mitigation evidence | What work is documented for review | Automatic approval or a particular premium reduction |
| Insurer assessment | The insurer’s assessment under its own requirements | A decision CertiDwell can reproduce from public maps alone |
A property outside a mapped zone is not risk-free. A property inside a higher hazard zone is not automatically uninsurable. If you have questions about an insurer’s assessment, ask your licensed agent or insurer for its explanation and applicable review process.
CertiDwell places public hazard information beside your evidence file so the source of each fact is visible. Keep hazard information separate from mitigation status and any actual insurer decision.
See a sample evidence file. Start a property file.
